This track was written while on holiday in the seaside village of Scratby in Norfolk. It was inspired by an evening spent at the beach and watching the moon shining on the waves. The term ‘Moonglade’ is used to describe the bright reflection of moonlight on a body of water. The picture used for the artwork was taken on that night, and the wave recordings used in the track were captured at the beach. The title is taken from John Koenig’s ‘Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows’, which is “a dictionary of made-up words for emotions that we all feel but don't have the words to express”. Kenopsia is defined as “the eerie, forlorn atmosphere of a place that's usually bustling with people but is now abandoned and quiet”. This piece aims to capture the unsettling conflict between nostalgia and emptiness that leads to this feeling. The initial melody sounds somewhat ambiguous and is chopped, making it feel disjointed and almost like a record skipping. When the bass enters, it feels like it should resolve to D minor, but it never does. As the atmosphere builds and other elements are introduced, the unresolved harmony becomes familiar but still feels off. It continues to build after the sparse drums enter, and a number of the various elements begin panning left and right, which helps establish the atmosphere and enhances the stereo experience (which is best experienced with headphones). Just as the piece is about to reach its climax, the initial melody returns as the focus, and when looped, the song seamlessly restarts and continues indefinitely, keeping the listener in this state of limbo, longing for some kind of resolution that never comes. To me, the unsatisfying, limbo-like atmosphere evokes a similar sense of ambivalence as being in a once familiar space that triggers nostalgic memories but now no longer feels the same. The artwork for this single is a photo that I took while being driven through Letchworth town centre at night. Lunicium - Dislimn ‘Dislimn’, the latest single by Lunicium, is now available to buy, download, and stream on all platforms! https://mindzi.ampsuite.com/releases/links?id=63 'Lunicium' is the pseudonym for the personal music project of Stephen Pryke. ‘Dislimn’ is a Progressive Lo-Fi (or Pro-Fi) track, with elements of Ambient, Trip-Hop, and Synthwave. This is the first in a series of pieces inspired by photos I’ve taken while out and about. I enjoy capturing moments like this, as it allows me to re-experience a certain feeling or atmosphere, or whatever inspired me to take the picture in the first place. I’ve since decided to try and score some of these still images to create a more immersive audio-visual experience. Not only is it an interesting composition exercise, but it also allows me to bring these images to life and convey what I was feeling or experiencing at the time in a way that others might identify with. The photo that led to the creation of ‘Dislimn’ was taken on December 1st 2023 while walking home with a friend. It was a very foggy night, and I was awestruck by some lights glowing in the distance. They created a golden haze that lit up the sky and blurred into the darkness. In this piece, I wanted to replicate the ambiguous and slightly unsettled atmosphere, and I did so by using odd time signatures, tonal ambiguity in the first and final sections, and a lo-fi sonic aesthetic. The bass, ambience, and pads are used to build fairly dense textures that make you feel like you’re being consumed by the immense fog. I tried to keep the drums simple and sparse, adding to the sense of space and providing some rhythmic context. 'Nihilium' is an experimental dark ambient track, and it's the final track on '3.5D², Vol. 2', a 16-track multi-genre album that features sumptuous sonic offerings from Wuji.fx, Lunicium, Wer Am I, 4th Sun Alliance, The Divine Underground, Calgorythm, N9NE and Mover. This track evolved from a simple 5-note melody played in 4-note phrases, offsetting a note each time, almost like a melodic polymeter. This repeats throughout as additional melodic layers are introduced, furthering the melodic complexity with extra notes and descending phrases. A cinematic soundscape and minimal rhythmic elements build with the piece until the melodies finally re-synchronise and the polymeter is resolved.
